Marco Felluga

Bereits seit nahezu 150 Jahren und nunmehr fünf Generationen widmet sich die Familie Felluga dem Weinbau. Das Unternehmen „Marco Felluga“ besteht seit den 50er Jahren, mit Firmensitz in Gradisca d’Isonzo. Sein Namensgeber und Gründer war bestrebt, die Familientradition zu wahren, als studierter Önologe neue Technologien und Erkennt nisse einzubringen und das Weingut als Aushängeschild der Region Collio zu etablieren. Und so wurde er in jüngster Vergangenheit in der Tat mit der Führung des Konsortiums Collio DOC betraut. Heute wird das 100 Hektar Weinberge umfassende Weingut mit Leidenschaft und Hingabe von Marcos Sohn Roberto geleitet. Und früher wie heute geht man dabei einen Weg von Innovation, Qualität und Forschung.

From the Sea to the Land. Wine: A Vocation Cultivated Generation After Generation
More than a century has gone by since the first Felluga’s history (Marco’s Great-grandfather) interwined with that of wine. Isola d’Istria, on the coast, was the production point of origin of Malvasia and Refosco. The Great War had just finished and it was a happy destiny that made the family set foot in Grado, on the other side of the Gulf, and then in Friuli. Only a handful of kilometres, but the scenery changed radically. It was here that Giovanni’s second to last son, Marco, as his grandfather before him, discovered, fell in love with and chose to live in that area called Collio which has always had the vine and wine at its heart. Marco began his training at the prestigious Oenological School of Conegliano and it is he who directed the family business towards the path of innovation with an emphasis on quality and research which is now carried on by his son Roberto, representing the fifth generation, with renewed passion and devotion. He is now at the head of the two prestigious wineries located in the Collio Doc, Marco Felluga in Gradisca d’Isonzo and Russiz Superiore in Capriva del Friuli.

From the Land to its Fruits: the Collio, unique and unrepeatable
The Collio is a special land, its landscape covered by mountains, streams and gentle hills. It is here that the family found it impossible to resist the pull of the wine and the land which they knew instinctively to be a soil rich with potential. The intuition proved true as this area would be one of the first in Italy to be acknowledged with the title DOC in 1964. The climate here is mild, thanks to the proximity of the Adriatic sea (30 km far away) and the protection of the mountains, the Pre Julian Alps, with hot days and cool nights during spring (important changes of temperature between day and night) and delicate and mild summers. Each hill has its own microclimate, and the soil, rich of marl and sandstone stratification, is the ideal habitat for vineyards and for the cultivation of the special grape varieties particular to the Collio Doc. This type of soil, called “flysch” (“ponca” in the Friulano language), is due to the phenomenon of the water erosion which took place 100 million years ago.

Tradition and research leading to qualitative improvements: this is Roberto’s winemaking philosophy
Another important value that has always characterized the production is the link with the territory. All the white wines can be drunk both young or may be left to refine for some years thus developing a very interesting mineral complexity and a ripe fruits bouquet. Roberto has developed the project of the “aging white wines”, which started with the Collio Bianco Col Disôre Russiz Superiore and with the Collio Bianco Molamatta Marco Felluga, and continued with the “Riserve”, the Pinot Grigio Mongris Riserva Marco Felluga, the Pinot Bianco Riserva Russiz Superiore and the Sauvignon Riserva Russiz Superiore. Although the production is specialized for white wines, as from the wine tradition from Friuli, the quality of red wines is noteworthy too. Provided with an important structure they can age for a long time.

From the vineyards to wines with love and passion
The vineyards of the winery Marco Felluga are located in four different villages in the Collio Doc: Farra, San Floriano, Oslavia and Cormòns. From these vines comes the quality of its wines, both white and red. The vineyards of Russiz Superiore are situated around the cellar in a single body in the heart of the Collio. From these vineyards, located in the village of Russiz Superiore in the municipality of Capriva del Friuli, comes the refined elegance and complexity of its wines.

From the vineyards to wines with love and passion The white monovarieties Marco Felluga (white label) are vinified in steel, while the Collio Bianco Molamatta (blend of Pinot Bianco, Tocai Friulano and Ribolla Gialla) and the Collio Pinot Grigio Riserva Mongris (both with the black label) are in part vinified and aged in oak. The red mono varieties age for about 12 months in wooden casks, while the Collio Rosso Carantan (blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon) ages in small oak barrels for nearly two years.
